Off-Grid Inverter Installation Guide: Wiring, Safety and Commissioning
A practical installation walkthrough for off-grid inverters — wiring order, breaker sizing, grounding, battery connection and the commissioning checks before first power-up.
A clean, safe installation is the difference between years of reliable off-grid power and repeated service calls. This guide follows the sequence our own engineers use when commissioning systems.
Safety first: this guide is for qualified installers. Battery banks can deliver very high currents — a short circuit at the terminals is dangerous. Disconnect sources in the correct order and use insulated tools.
Wiring order that avoids surprises
Connect in this order, and reverse it for disassembly:
- Grounding first — connect the system ground (inverter chassis, panels and battery negative where the manual specifies) before any power wiring.
- Battery to inverter — connect the battery bank with the correct fuse or breaker in line, observing polarity. Most inverters will not start until the DC input is present.
- PV array to the charge controller — with panels covered or a breaker open, wire the array to the MPPT input.
- AC output — connect the load side last, and keep it off until commissioning.
Breaker and cable sizing
- DC battery cable — sized for the inverter’s max current plus margin; too-small cable is the most common cause of voltage drop and heat.
- Battery fuse/breaker — rated above continuous current, placed at the battery terminal.
- PV breaker — rated for the string current, with the correct DC rating.
- AC breaker — matches the inverter’s output rating and local code.
Commissioning checklist
Before switching on:
- Polarity verified on battery and PV connections
- Torque on all power terminals per the manual
- Ground continuity confirmed
- Battery voltage within the inverter’s input range
- No exposed conductors near terminals
Then power up in the same order as wiring: battery, then PV, then loads. Watch the display for the first minutes — error codes or abnormal voltage readings at this stage prevent much bigger problems later.
Documentation matters
Record the wiring diagram, settings, and firmware version for each install. This makes warranty and future expansion straightforward — and it is the professional standard customers expect from a distributor’s install team.
Installation — FAQ
Can I connect the battery backwards?
Never — reverse polarity on the DC input can damage the inverter's input stage and voids warranty. Double-check polarity before connecting, and use a fused connection.
What size cable do I need between battery and inverter?
Size for the inverter's maximum DC current with at least 25% margin, and keep the run short. Refer to the manual's cable table for the exact recommendation.
Do off-grid inverters need a ground connection?
Yes. The chassis and system ground must be connected per the manual and local code. A missing ground is a safety hazard and a common cause of odd fault codes.
